Newton, AL
As a child, my dad or my mom would take us over the railroad track to visit friends of my parents who lived in Newton, Alabama in one on the white antebellum homes with the wrap around porches. Being raised in the 60’s and 70’s, my memories were that Newton was the hilly area with a bridge that overlooked the Choctawhatchee River, and it was difficult to see any water looking over the bridge.  But, I was told by my father that Newton was a prospering town back in it’s day.  Dad would tell me stories his parents would share with him about how Newton played a large part in helping the surrounding area grow during the past 100 or so years.  The Choctawhatchee River played a significant part in the growth of Dale County.
Newton known as one of the oldest cities in the Wiregrass. With much history to tell, the people of Newton re-enact the battles of the Confederate Army during the mid to late 1800’s on a yearly basis for the young at heart and history buffs of the area.  This town loves it’s roots, as well as it’s future. Always known as a great educational community, Newton exists today with only one school.  Newton Elementary School is rated Excellent for elementary age academic achievement.  It’s not surprising to many of the locals, as history has told us that Newton was responsible for this area’s excellence in Christian and State educational apptitude test scores as far back as the mid to late 1800’s into the early 100’s.  Ancestry’s of many tribes of Indians live in the people of Newton, with roots from the many traveling and retiring military that settled in this area.

Locals combine church activities and area community volunteerism for the elderly in southern hospitality style of communion. With a mixture of business activities, Newton has (but not limited to) a lawyer’s office, a plumbing and electrical supply store, a couple of thrift stores, a bank and a convenient gas store.
