Geneva, Alabama
Geneva, Alabama, the county seat for Geneva County, Alabama surrounds the “Junction” of the Pea River and the Choctawatchee River. The “Junction” is located where these two historic rivers meet to flow south towards the State of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico. The “Junction” is also known locally as the area where all the historic beginnings of the community of Geneva, Alabama started it’s development. Surrounded by large oaks and pines that could be thousands of years old, the city was moved inland in the mid 1800’s due to earlier floods that devastated the area over time. Geneva, Alabama is also known for helping transport the needed materials to build municipalities due to it’s founders establishing a trading center for steam-powered riverboats between the 17th to the late 1800’s.
Today, Geneva Alabama and it’s namesake, Geneva, County established in 1868, includes sister communities of Malvern, Slocomb, Hartford, Coffee Springs, Black, Chancellor, and Bellwood. All of these small rural communites are tight knit with the natural beauty of mossy oaks surrounding the area with hundreds of square miles of farm land, creeks and of course the famous historic rivers, the Pea and the Choctawatchee. The lumber industry has always thrived in this area as well. In 2003, the “Big Oak” located at the “Junction” in Geneva, Alabama was listed on Alabama’s Famous and Historic Tree Program being recognized for the meeting place for it’s earlier citizens to plan the development for the new community known as Geneva.
Today, Mayor Wynnton and his elected council members are now in the midst of planning a new community center with funds from the city and private members. Stimulus monies from the Alabama Department of Transportation have funded the building project for a new Geneva County Health Department to be located on County Road 41 next to the Farm Center. The City of Geneva is also having their sidewalks restored in a revitalization project to be funded by federal stimulus money administered by the state.
Great things are happening in the town of Geneva, Alabama. Come and enjoy the day in this growing and friendly community.
