Dear NCC Members,

Sorry I haven’t sent anything out in a while. Im in summer school
and have been busy. But this is something I had to tell you about.
I found out today that 3 New York Judges are allowing the
F-WORD to be aired anytime of the day, no matter who’s watching.
What about decency laws and protecting us kids its bad enough at
school but now on TV.

The Parents Television Council is great! Here is their link below
to help fight back. Please sign there online petition. Lets
get back to the basics and treat people with civility. We can all
make a difference, but we have to work together. Let’s do this!!

Vote for and elect a governor who will work for the people of Alabama. Ron Sparks has said that he does not gamble and really doesn’t have any reason to visit a legal or quote, “illegal” casino in Alabama. But, the fact remains that they are still in operation here in in the State of Alabama……and has been for many, many years. It is simply not fair for one operation to be able to conduct business and not another. How do we say it…….point, blank, period.

In the early years of the 1800’s, with the Revolutionary War ending….. President Thomas Jefferson sent Colonel Epharaim Kerby to scout the waterway of the Chattahoochee River. Thus, to determine the opportunity to add another region to the United States. The report was obviously worthy for the President and his staff to start the confrontations that would be embedded in our history books forever. In order for this area to become part of the land of the free, the Indian Wars between the United States and the Creek Nations was not an option, but a given. Indians of every tribe in the “Mississippi Territory” would not freely relinquish their rights to the lands and live in peace with the new government to come.

Led by General Andrew Jackson, the Indian Wars began in 1813 and did not last long. Soon the Chiefs of the Creek Nation would seek resolution in exchange for no more fighting on their behalf. A Treaty was drawn up with an agreement for payment of the land and a new reservation to be offered in the soon to be named, State of Alabama. This “Boundary” line for their expulsion into another portion of the State would not come without some tribes staying to make the acquisition more troublesome.

So yet again, in 1816 – 1817 General Jackson led his army to run the majority of Creek, Seminole and Choctaw Indians to the area south into the Spanish Territory of Florida and west into the Mississippi Territory. Many, whom were friendlier or had influence with the local white man, were allowed to stay. With this expulsion, came political movements to move them even further to an area in South Florida.

In early 1819, when the south eastern bank region was formed by the Alabama Territorial Legislature, influential patriots and settlers planning the move into the area proposed to call the newly developed area “Henry County”. This in honor of one of the forefather’s of the War of Independence, Patrick Henry. Later that year, on December 13, 1819, Henry County was created and was more than 4,000 square miles in size. This “Mother County” would birth eight other counties until 1885 when the final county was established. These counties are in the order that they were created: Covington, Pike, Dale, Barbour, Coffee, Crenshaw, Geneva and Houston.

Over the next 50 years, the white settlers (some with slaves for help with plantations chores) would move into the area slowly and cautiously. The uncivilized areas were dangerous to travel due to very few roads being available for transporting their families and their belongings. The entire area was filled with dense woods and untamed wild animals along the banks of the three rivers that flow south into the Gulf of Mexico.

Many of those who fought for our right to live in the “Wiregrass” never really got the chance to see our area grow with their efforts and sacrifice, at least here on earth. But they knew that going into the fight. But, with that effort many dreams where fulfilled to allow us to grow as neighbors for freedom and the American way of life. The farming, industrial, retail, and medical industries have helped our area grow at a steady pace while our municipalities prospered with many obstacles to overcome. We invite other industries to prosper as well.

We are blessed to have been raised here and welcome new resident’s and industry to look at our area for their next relocation. Thank you for visiting www.DothanAlabamaMall.com where the “Mall” is the “Wiregrass”.

“The Importance of the Southeastern River Banks…..”

Geologists have stated that the Chattahoochee River could be several millions of years old. Some researchers acknowledge that this area was once underwater before nature took it’s course and formed what would become no man’s land for ages. The Chattohoochee River is known today as approximately 550 mile long body of water beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Union County, GA. Flowing south, the Chattahoochee River is the border to the southern half of Alabama and Georgia. Flowing south at the Alabama/Georgia line is the Panhandle of North Florida. Crossing into North Florida, the Chattahoochee River empties itself into the Gulf of Mexico by means of the Chattahoochee Bay in Applachicola, Florida.

For centuries before the early 1800’s, several tribes of Indians have roamed these lands to the West of the Chattahoochee River. In the years of 1500 through the early 1800’s these tribes would encounter many international explorers in pursuit of treasures and/or, of a new way of life. During this time, these explorers would fly their flags all over this area in the attempt to own this land. The Spanish, French and the British explorers would soon move to other locations of the Southeast and west, or back to their native lands across the Oceans. With many confrontations with the Creek Nation, it was our forefathers (of the United States) who had the determination to merge the Northeastern portion of the United States with this area south into Florida. Soon the “Wiregrass Area” would emerge. The life that we live today did not come without sacrifices of many before us on the rivers and the lands we occupy today.

The Chattahoochee River has significant importance to the Wiregrass Area as being a local Natural Historical Resource that allowed this area to become a “civilized” region. The “Pledge of Allegience” is used today by our schools as being a reference to support our faith in God. The democratic lifetsyle and the biblical beliefs that our ancestors and forefathers used to develop this nation are still used in the South and allowed us to become concious of the good and bad in and around the world that surrounds us. Many Churches of all faiths would be built over the next century and become the backbone of the communities of which they were formed.

The Chattahoochee, Choctawatchee and the Pea Rivers swift current would bring us the natural resources to allow energy to be used as electricity, thereby allowing us to become a civilized environment. Just off the Chattahoochee River banks, Columbia Power Company was founded in 1914. Thereby, providing power for the Cotton Gins and Grist Mills on the river soon after the 19th century. Over the years, Columbia Power would sell out to the Southern Company. This was the beginning of what would become an economic impact for our area. In the late 1970’s, Farley Nuclear Plant was constructed to increase the amount of power needed to develop the area. As time has passed, the need for electricity has increased with the generations of families that would eventually settle in this area. Pea River and Wiregrass Cooperatives would soon emerge supporting the majority of electricity needed for the counties west of what would become Houston County.

In the late 1880’s, the Midand State Railway and Georgia Southern Railway systems would offer our area a chance to utilize the Railroad for transportation and economic trading throughout the United States. After agreements were made to purchase the area desired for the Depot Headquarters in what would become Pinckard, Alabama, the Midland and Georgia Southern Railroad would call the Gandy Dancers in for constructing the Bridge. On June 12, 1889 the first “Locomotive Steam Engine” crossed the Chatthoochee River into Gordon’s Depot. This transporation method would be a blessing for the formation of our area. Thus, helping our leaders transport the needed materials to build the infrastructure and communities of what is now known as “The Wiregrass” for the next fifty years. The creation of the American Automotive and the International flight system would soon bring to our area the needed trasportation methods known all over the world created before us.

Today, The Historical Chattahoochee River is also known as Columbia River by the locals because of it’s location in Houston County, Alabama Many of the old train railbridges still remain as a replica of what was once a way of life but now our history. Chattahoochee State Park located in the Columbia City limits was developed in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In the 1980’s, State Representative John Beasley secured State funds to renovate the old dam . These funds help install the recreational vehicle hookups, restrooms and running water used for family gatherings and daily water recreation that we enjoy today.

To submit your vessel as a vessel of opportunity skimming system: 281.366.5511

For more information, go to www.floridagulfrecoveryjobs.com.

* BP is hiring owners of U.S. Coast Guard-inspected boats, and the boats’ crews. To register a boat, call 281-366-5511.
* Some Labor Finders temp agency locations along the coast have cleanup jobs available for individuals. Visit a nearby location for more information.
* New York-based Miller Environmental Group is seeking local workers for beach cleanup and can be contacted at 631-603-3533 or GOM@millerenv.com
* The state of Alabama is also collecting resumes from potential workers. For more information, go to joblink.alabama.gov.

To be eligible for most of the cleanup jobs, workers must complete Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training, often called HAZWOPER training. The courses can be as long as 40 hours.

Many of the hiring organizations said they pay for the cost of training.

BP Pay Rates

* Crew member (or ship captain): $200 each for an eight-hour day
* Boats 30 feet or smaller: $1,200 per day
* 30-foot to 45-foot boats: $1,500 per day

The potential jobs come as many Gulf Coast residents are struggling financially. People employed in the seafood, boating and tourism industries face an uncertain future because of the oil spill.

Many Gulf Coast residents are also still trying to recover from major hurricane strikes within the last decade, as well as the global economic downturn.

Some local residents have expressed concerns that BP is hiring out-of-towners to do the work, instead of the people whose livelihoods are threatened by the spill.

Zachary Greenawalt, a subsea installation engineer for BP, said the company favors giving preference to Gulf Coast residents.

Have you ever thought about remodeling your bathroom while adding a walk-in bathtub as a therapeutic and decorative feature for your personal and/or extra bathroom? Every home should have at least one of these beautiful tubs in their home for when you may need it. Compared to a whirlpool, this beautiful tub is the new therapeutic phenomenon!

Whether or not you are a special needs person, by adding this wonderful benefit to your home you would be making a good decision for your family. Everyday, millions of people hurt themselves by pulling a muscle in their body or straining their back. This is a great way to ease the pain and suffering of your rehabilitation right in your own home.

Also, if you should be in the process of obtaining bids on tubs for your nursing home or other commercial project please allow us to bid on your needed number of tubs. Call 334.685.3156 and ask for Jan Renae, your local representative for more information or click here for a review of our tubs!

January 14, 2009

Actions speak louder than words.

Our elected official, Governor Bob Riley of the State of Alabama; the same State of Alabama that gave “Country Crossing” the license to operate a business AND to open the doors of the “Bingo Pavilion” of “Country Crossing“, has gone to far. Before the land acquisition and the actual purchase of the property for the development, Governor Bob Riley visited our city and his comments where,” he supported any entertainment within the law of the State of Alabama and would, AFTER they opened, visit the facility and determine if the gaming machines are illegal or not.” WHAT? I would think. AFTER? Did he just say, “spend your money first and then we will try and shut you down?”

This is the same Governor of Alabama (”along with Alabama Law”) that has allowed recent openings in the State, and who supports the gaming of the existing, self proclaimed “CASINO’S“, that are open in the State of Alabama. All the while these “CASINO’S” (as they call themselves), are advertising on our local television stations such as Channel 4, our local FOX Channel and Channel 18, here in Dothan, Alabama. My Point? You ask. This morning, January 14, 2010, while watching the news on WTVY (channel 4) and listening to the story about how a group stemming from the “Citizens for a Better Alabama” came together Wednesday afternoon on the steps of the State House to let the public know they are against gambling. Then, “low and behold“, a commercial for the “CASINO” in Atmore, ALABAMA is graciously inviting our citizens (in Houston County) to their facility to gamble in their “CASINO“!

“Country Crossing’s” local “BINGO PAVILION“, as it is called here in Houston County, Alabama, has yet to advertise on our local television stations. They are getting enough local advertising through our local and state newscast’s at 6: a.m., 12: p.m. and again at 6 and 10 p.m. at night! Hey, Governor, while your telling people you don’t allow gambling in the State of Alabama, why don’t you go ahead and tell the “CASINO’S in the State of Alabama that they can’t advertise on our State’s television station’s because the State of Alabama doesn’t allow gambling.

This is the same Governor of Alabama that has allowed cut’s to our education system here in the entire State of Alabama. Governor Bob Riley cut the educational budget where it is needed most. He’s allowed his own agenda’s to become more important than our teacher’s salaries, and the needed funding to accommodate the needs of the educational building and remodeling funds that are desperately needed along with other extra curricular facilities to create awareness of the world around us. He put’s our children of the State of Alabama on the back burner because he has to fund his task force to fight illegal gambling in the State of Alabama. This is what he feels our taxes would be better spent on and I’m sure in other agenda’s that we never hear about. All we know is that our schools and our unemployed, are not worth his generosity.

This is the same Governor Riley of Alabama who is heavily opposed to gambling. So much so that he had founded the Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling, after the announcement in November 2008 of the location of Country Crossing to be in Houston County, Alabama. Not before. On January 6th, 2010 the task force was set to raid the Dothan Bingo Pavilion under the “pretext” that the games did not fit the law separating bingo machines from slot machines. Over three dozen state troopers were said to have congregated before daybreak on the Wednesday (before the Thursday of the SEC Championship game) close to Country Crossing’s location, ready to bring your threats to a close, your way. Calling Country Crossing a unlawful “Casino”. But, according to the law of Alabama, should be called a “Bingo Pavilion” because it meets the requirements of the State. Our Local government had to step in of course (as they are known to do when they feel it’s needed), causing the power’s that be, (local vs. state officials) to swap threats with power. The local officials came out on top. The local officials had taken the initiative, going to the home of a judge just after midnight. The judge signed an order to stop the raid, an order that was personally delivered by Houston County Commissioner Mark Culver at the location of the Task Force.

This is the same Governor Bob Riley who was in California (during this planned raid) along with other Alabama Economic consultants during the SEC Championship football game about to be televised on National Television. All this to promote Alabama Economic Development. All the while having his sharks here in Houson, County, ALABAMA to embarrass and destroy the economic development going on right here in his own State? What’s up with that? Our machines have bingo cards on them just like other’s in the State. You have to change the number’s on the card’s in order to be a winner of a BINGO! Our local “Privilion” just pay’s out more than regular “Bingo” games.

Governor Riley, we are tired of your wishy washy governing tactics! We are tired of you not paying attention to the citizens, including our children of the State of Alabama. So what if the County of Houston, Alabama decided to use the laws of the State of Alabama to better educate our children (building a library) and further employment opportunities with our own economic development that is obviously legal, because the State of Alabama gave it a “Business License” to do so. You certainly have not tried to help our communities. Also, you have used your position to say, “this casino can be in business, but this “bingo pavilion” can not be in business.” You are using your “power” to threaten and misinterpret the laws of the State of Alabama by allowing other gaming facilities to operate and give absolutely nothing back (other than jobs) to the communities that they reside in.

This is why are we upset. We are upset that you are also using YOUR power’s and some of OUR state taxes, to raid a facility who just gave $1.8 million dollars (in one month’s business) back to the County of Houston, which it resides in. Our County, Houston County of ALABAMA, Governor. We want to know who Atmore, ALABAMA and the other self proclaimed “CASINO’S” in Alabama are giving back to……., well? What’s up with this picture?

It seems to me and thousands of others that you wanted “Country Crossing” developers to spend millions to facilitate this deal and build this facility so you could come in and be the big hero and RAID it. Shame on you! Why didn’t you work with them from the beginning and see what kind of machines they were going to be using before the land acquisition. You were invited, remember………oh, yeah, that’s right…….you wanted to be a hero, so you didn’t cooperate. That would have been too honorable and easy. You didn’t want to fight the battle then, why now and why so dishonorable?

As I said: Actions speak louder than Words, Governor. I can’t wait till election time!

We are searching for ALL Dale County Class of 1980 graduates! We are so excited to announce a 30 year Reunion at “Old Town” off of Hwy. 52 and County Rd. 49. We’re going to have a “pot luck picnic” with grilled hamburgers provided by Melanie Kennedy Popwell’s husband Sammy! “Old Town” features authentic “Wild West” shootouts and dramatic plays to enjoy. What an entertaining place to get together and just have a good time from 2 – 7 p.m. August 21, 2010.

What should you bring other than yourself? A family donation is suggested and a pot luck dish and your drinks. Depending on how many people show up will be a consideration of how much of a donation you should make. It is costing us $375.00 to rent the hall and we would like to have at least that much to do another reunion in five years.

Call 334-685-3156 to confirm your reservation by August 1st. Thank You.
